Mass Ave Turned Into Bicycle Boulevard!!!!!
Written by Boston Biker on Apr 01
Holy Crap! The Cambridge Bike Committee announced this morning that the city has agreed to convert the entire length of Mass Ave, from the Harvard Bridge to the Arlington Line, into a dedicated Bike Boulevard. The road will be renamed the Sheldon Brown Memorial Bike Boulevard.
According to preliminary designs, automobiles will still be allowed on the Boulevard, but they will be required to drive in a dedicated “Motorized Vehicle Lane”, which will be 6 feet wide and located next to the bike parking lane. Car parking will not be allowed. Cycling enthusiasts have responded very positively to the proposed changes, but not everyone is satisfied with the new road layout. “The new car lane is located too close to the bike parking, and drivers will constantly drive in fear of getting handlebarred by careless bike parkers,” said Kran K. D. Ryver, president of the Cambridge Automobile Club.
Restriping of the lanes will commence in early June, and the Boulevard will be dedicated on July 14, Sheldon’s birthday. More details about the Bike Boulevard plans can be found here.
